NJ Transit guys all have a special hole punch that leaves its own unique hole so they know who punched it if there is a dispute. And since the tickets don't really expire they try not to leave people with them. So you're cheating them money if you try to reuse that ticket to get out of paying a surcharge in the future. If you board a train without a new ticket you have to buy one with cash on the train with a surcharge. So they'll want to make sure you have an up to date ticket, plus if you forgot to get a new ticket and try to use an old one you've gamed the system. You can't leave Secaucus without going through a turnstyle, but you could attempt to jump if there's no security looking. So even if it says SEC -> NYP you can use that same ticket to go from NYP -> SEC and in NYP there is no scanner to check that it is a new ticket. even if you got on at a station that as a scanner. Even if it's scanned it can be used to attempt proof of purchase if you jump a terminal so they may take the ticket.
